Flipping to the Screen: The Martian

I’m (trying) to do sort of a challenge to myself where I read a book and then watch the corresponding movie or tv show, hopefully each month. I’ll then be doing a short post about how I liked both of them and the differences and what not. This is that post!

This month I choose The Martian by Andy Weir because you basically can’t go outside without hearing about how awesome it was. I read the book earlier this month and just recently watched the movie. Here’s what I thought:

The Book

I ended up giving the book 4 stars because I really did enjoy it. It’s not usually my genre of choice so it was nice that I wasn’t too bored. One thing that brought the rating down was that there was a lot of technical talk that I didn’t understand. I’m sure it was all accurate and everything but I wouldn’t have been able to tell if it was made up or not. It made some parts a little boring.

Also I found that the character development wasn’t really there. Sure we felt bad for Mark but we hardly saw the other characters until they were needed. I would have like to feel for them too but I didn’t.

Other than those reasons I actually really did enjoy reading this book. The main character was really funny and easy to follow along with even though I know nothing about surviving on Mars. I’d recommend to give it a shot!

The Movie

We all know the books are almost always better than the movie but I try to also think of the movies as though I hadn’t read the book. Sometimes that really helps me figure out what I really feel about the movie.

In this case, after thinking it through, the book really is better than the movie. Sure the movie didn’t have as much technical talk but I actually found it to be pretty boring. In the book there’s tons of things that go wrong. (Living on Mars can do that). Compared to the book, movie Mark had it EXTREMELY easy. Those plot twists keeping you on the edge of your seat during the book, weren’t present in the movie. They did focus a little more on the characters though which was nice but still didn’t make up for the lack of interesting things happening on Mars.

The Ratings

Book: 4/5 stars

Movie: 3/5 stars

What were your thoughts on the book or movie? Do you agree? Which book to movie adaptation should I try next? Let me know below!
