Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape. Desperate to save Lia's life, her erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar's interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen.

Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: There's Rafe, who lied to Lia but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be savages. Now that she lives among them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country... and her own destiny.

Initial Thoughts

I had really high expectations for this book. I mean the first book was pretty awesome right? So I was nervous to start it and actually put it off for a while because I didn’t want it to be ruined.

My New BFF

I think Lia is a great main character. I love that she never stops fighting but not just physically. She was really great at keeping up with all the subtle fighting that was going on too. She had to act a certain way in order to plan her escape which I pretty much what this whole book was about.

My Crush

I easily pick Kaden over Rafe. I’m sure a lot of you will hate me for it but Kaden just tries so much harder than Rafe! He’s in a harder position and is confused about what he should do. He owes his life to a horrible man but it still loyal to him. I love how conflicted he was throughout the whole book. My favourite parts were any parts that had him in it. He’s just such an interesting character! It’s hard not to love him for it.

Writing Style

I’m really enjoying the author’s writing in this book. I was nervous it wouldn’t live up to the expectations the first book left me with but it did. I thought all the characters were really great and well developed but still a little mysterious sometimes. You don’t know everything yet. The plot was intense all the time and never left you bored. I’m also in love with the world the author created here even though we still don’t have as much detail as I’d like.

Closing Thoughts

I’m really happy with the direction this series is going in. I kind of hope it’s not just a trilogy but it’s looking like it might be. I just don’t want these characters to go away so fast! There’s so much more story to tell! I’m really looking forward to the next book! I’d recommend waiting until all the books are out to read this series because it will leave you hooked and wanting more.

  1. Love your reason for buying the book, I’m enjoying a series at the moment and keep buying the next book as soon as I’ve finished the one I’m reading.
