V

Vivid

(viv·id): full of life; lively; animated

That’s a fantastic definition. Full of life. That’s something that I think is essential in a good book. I want to be able to picture EXACTLY what is going on in my head. I want to see all the characters pop out of the pages! I hate it when an author isn’t descriptive enough so you don’t really know what’s going on. It’s a reading pet peeve. I love it when a book is just so descriptive i can tell you the exact colours of everything mentioned. Or I know exactly how a character is supposed to look. It makes a book way more enjoyable.

Here’s some great examples:

  • The Princess Bride by William Goldman
  • A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
  • Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

  1. I love this characteristic as well. I find it so important that I try to emulate that in my own writing as well. There are some times when it doesn’t have to be exact but others where it is necessary. Another great post. =)
